Digitalisation and automation of rail freight operations are crucial for the competitiveness of the European industry. The project demonstrates and delivers solutions that contribute to increased capacity, higher throughput and shorter transport times for freight transport. Key factors are the digital train and the introduction of digital automatic couplers, DAC. DAC enables automatic coupling and uncoupling of wagons as well as electrification and data transmission through the train.

DAC-tests are being carried out in Sweden under some of the most demanding railway conditions in Europe. The tests are a crucial step in the authorisation process for the upcoming pioneer trains. The pioneer trains are part of Europe’s Rail’s planned concept to run DAC trains in several locations in Europe from 2026/2027 for a broader implementation and modernisation of rail freight transport.
