A railway wheel will operate for several hundred thousand of kilometres subjected to extreme loads in an environment where millimetre tolerances need to be considered. This puts extreme demands on material and geometry.
This session explores different types of deterioration phenomena, their underlying causes, how they are addressed in design and maintenance, and how tests and simulations are used to validate performance. It will also provide examples of wheel designs developed for different operational conditions.

Speaker: Lorenzo Ghidini, R&D Engineer, Lucchini RS; and Anders Ekberg, professor in Railway mechanics, Chalmers University of Technology
